Nick's Gospel Album Talk

We think by now everyone has heard of the Jonas Brothers the trio known for their uplifting, positive lyrics, but did you know Nick Jonas almost launched a career in gospel music? As reported in The Jonas Brothers: the gospel and Lines, Vines and Trying Times, the Jonas brothers are the Evangelical sons of an Assemblies of God pastor who managed Christian music groups before managing his famous sons.

The Jonas Brothers first came to my attention in 2006 when they came to Gospel Music Week hot on the heels of releasing their Spring 2006 debut project, It’s About Time on INO Records. INO had planned to release a solo record on then 13-year-old vocal powerhouse Nicholas Jonas. However, after recording some background vocals with his brothers, Joseph, 16 and Kevin, 17, the producers realized how great they sounded as a trio, so the Jonas Brothers was formed as a band.

What many people don’t know is that the album Nick Jonas was working on back then was heavily a gospel album. Nick had written a song in 2002 with his father called “Joy to the World (A Christmas Prayer).” Nick who was performing in Beauty and the Beast at the time, performed the song on the 2002 annual Broadway “Equity Fights AIDS” album, Broadway’s Greatest Gifts: Carols for a Cure, Vol. 4. INO Records received a demo copy of “Joy to the World (A Christmas Prayer)” in 2003, and released the song to Christian radio, where it quickly became popular.

“Joy to the World (A Christmas Prayer)” was relesed again in 2004 by Columbia and INO. The single was supposed to be followed by Nick’s solo album Nicholas Jonas, but the project only received a limited release in 2004 because Columbia Records decided to sign the Jonas Brothers as a group act.

Other tracks appearing on the Nicholas Jonas limited release pop-gospel album are: Dear God, Time For Me To Fly, Appreciate, Look Me In The Eyes, Higher Love (Master Mix Only), Please Be Mine, I Will Be The Light, Don’t Walk Away, Joy To The World, Crazy Kind Of Crush, Wrong Again. It would be nice to have the Jonas Brothers come full circle and do a pop-gospel project.

Now Nick’s limited-edition gospel-pop project Nicholas Jonas as well as the Jonas Brothers first album It’s About Time sell for as much as $200 if you can find them!
